A blackout tattoo is exactly what it sounds like: large portions of skin covered entirely in solid black ink. Full sleeves, full backs, legs, and torsos — the blackout style makes a statement that few other tattoo choices can match.

At Pangea Ink, blackout work is one of our most requested specialties. We’ve done everything from single-limb blackouts to nearly full-body projects. Here’s what you need to know before committing to one.

What Is a Blackout Tattoo?

A blackout tattoo fills large areas of skin with dense, solid black ink. Unlike traditional black-and-grey work — which uses diluted ink and shading — a true blackout pushes as much pigment as possible into the skin until the area reads as completely opaque black.

Blackout tattoos are often used to:

Does a Blackout Tattoo Hurt More Than Regular Tattoos?

Yes — and it’s worth being honest about this. Blackout work involves repeated, heavy passes over the same area to build up saturation. The skin becomes increasingly sensitive during a session. Most artists (including ours) work in timed blocks with breaks built in, especially for large areas.

The inner arm, inner thigh, rib cage, and behind the knee are among the more painful zones. The outer areas of arms and legs are more manageable. Come well-rested, well-fed, and hydrated — it makes a measurable difference.

How Long Does a Blackout Tattoo Take?

More than almost any other style. A full arm sleeve blackout typically requires 12–20+ hours across multiple sessions. Healing time between sessions is mandatory — the skin needs to recover before taking more ink in the same area.

Blackout Tattoos on Darker Skin Tones

One common misconception is that blackout tattoos only work on light skin. This isn’t true — but the approach differs. On darker skin tones, the contrast is different, and the design considerations change. Our artists have experience with clients across all skin tones and will give you an honest assessment of how your specific skin will respond.

Caring for a Blackout Tattoo During Healing

Blackout tattoos require serious aftercare commitment. The volume of ink in the skin means the healing process is more intense than a standard tattoo:

Blackout Tattoos at Pangea Ink

Our artists have completed full-sleeve and full-back blackout projects for clients from across the Americas and Europe. Many of these clients booked through our tattoo tourism program specifically for multi-day blackout sessions — getting work done across several days in Panama City while experiencing the city between sessions.

If you’re considering a blackout project, start with a consultation. We’ll look at your skin, any existing work in the area, and your design goals, and give you an honest timeline and cost estimate.
